Boomtown Rats – Sunderland 1978

IMG_7011

I remember this night very well. The Sunderland crowd didn’t realize that punk had already come and gone, and decided to riot. Here’s a clip from the Sunderland Echo..

“…the autumn season was marred by the infamous concertby The Boomtown Rats, in October. Four rows of seats were pushed over, 120 were damaged at a cost of 1,500, and “fans” spat at Bob Geldof and his band.It was the end of punk, or any other kind of rock, concerts at the theatre for many years.”

A year before that the Rats had opened for Tom Petty and ….Fairport Convention! Not exactly riot material. Haha.
